Ready to bag a Bart Bird DLG wing - picture with comments.
Bart Bird 2 is my new DLG / SAL glider for 2004. It is a development of the Bart Bird DLG. The name remains Bart Bird DLG.
The Bart Bird DLG 2 incorporates the original Mark Drela Airfoils: root - AG 455ct-02 middle - AG 46ct-02 tip - AG 47ct-02 These airfoils are also used on the Super Gee II along with various other DLG planes. The Bart Bird 2 wing is a bit smaller than the Bart Bird DLG wing, it has dihedral in the middle and two full span flapperons. The wing is placed on top of the fuselage so there is place for enough flap movement when butterfly braking. The reason for the wing area (23 sqdm) is that it is easier to build it with a nice low wing loading than a glider with less area. Take a look at a glider that looks like it has low weight at 290-310 grams but having an area of around 21 sqdm (like the Highlight SAL). This yields a wing loading of 13,8-14,8 grams pr sqdm, where a 23 sqdm glider with a weight of 300-320 grams has a wing loading of 13,0-13,9 grams pr sqdm. So what at first glance looks like a heavier glider ends up as the one with the slightly lighter wing loading. |
